What Is Head Start?
Ohio Heartland CAC Head Start is a federally funded early childhood development program for low-income, foster children and children with special needs from the age of three through five and their families.  The Ohio Heartland Community Action Commission offers this free Head Start program in Marion, Morrow, Crawford and Richland Counties.  Children who attend Head Start participate in a variety of educational activities that promote early learning in the areas of science, language, literacy, math, fine and large motor skills and social-emotional development.  The children enjoy healthful meals and snacks, play with friends both indoors and outdoors and enjoy riding the bus to and from the centers.

Family involvement is the key to a successful Head Start program.  Head Start families have many opportunities to volunteer their time both at home and in the classrooms.  Elected family members can serve on the Policy Council, a board that partners with staff members in decision-making responsibilities for the program.  Families can participate in training in areas of health, CPR, job preparation, nutrition and can learn about many community resources.  Families may attend monthly Family Connection meetings to socialize with other parents/guardians and enjoy crafts, good snacks and training topics of their choice.

Ohio Heartland CAC Head Start Mission
Ohio Heartland Community Action Commission Head Start is dedicated to providing income eligible children and families with quality, comprehensive, developmentally appropriate programs that strengthen families and promote self-sufficiency.  The program operates according to applicable regulations, utilizing trained staff, volunteers, parents and a combination of organizational and community resources in an equitable and creative manner.

Benefits of Head Start
Numerous studies have confirmed that a child’s learning begins at birth.  For low-income children, quality pre-school education such as provided by OHCAC Head Start is crucial in establishing healthful habits and positive attitudes toward education which help establish the child as a life-long learner.  Because experiences between birth and the age of five shape a child for life, the quality of the children’s environment, social interactions and early learning experiences during those years is very important.

Program Options (Options vary by site.)
Home Base, one visit per week by the Home Visitor, 16 socialization days (Cluster Days) per year- snack served during socialization time.
